Abel Guier, bass [abel@grupogandhi.com][www.myspace.com/abelguier]

Abel joined Gandhi in 1996, before the recording of their first album.  He knew the rest of the band from their highschool years.  He began playing bass at age 16, inspired by Steve Harris from Iron Maiden and Cliff Burton from Metallica.  From the beginning he liked the bass, but mostly he wanted to write as a way of expression.  He is a lyricist and songwriter, and has a dark style, but sensitive at the same time, as he grew up listening to progressive bands such as Genesis and Pink Floyd (which by the way is the favorite of all Gandhi members).  He currently teaches bass and music privately, and when not performing or teaching, he takes care of his cattle and Ranch in Alajuela.  He enjoys playing and watching soccer games, reading, and listening to music.  He is the only married member of Gandhi, and has a 3-year-old daughter named Claudia.

Massimo Hernández, drums [massimo@grupogandhi.com] [www.massimohernandez.com]

Massimo met Luis and Federico through a common friend, and they quickly found a common interest and taste in music.  He began playing guitar at age ten and took on drums later on, inspired by Neil Peart from Rush and Stuart Copeland from The Police.  Being the youngest in the family, he grew up listening to their older brothers' classic LPs.  He quickly learned the who's who of music, enjoying many diverse styles from pop to funk to rock. As a drummer and guitarist, he is self-taught, and can pick songs by ear with great ease.  His particular style of drumming differs by being very melodic and musically oriented, besides being just rhythmic.  He also enjoys other forms of art and is well-known as a graphic designer.  He has created many CD art and covers, and designs all the visual and graphic art of Gandhi's shows and albums. Massimo has also started working as a producer with the debut album of the local band Sintagma.

Federico Miranda, guitar [federico@grupogandhi.com] [www.federicomiranda.com]

Federico met Luis in highschool.  They played together in a highschool contest and won 2nd place they have been working together ever since. Federico began playing the guitar at age 12, inspired by the guitar rock music of the 80s and 90s, such as Van Halen and virtuoso guitarist Joe Satriani.  Mostly self-taught, he began learning tunes 'by ear', and then took on theory, piano, and jazz guitar and improvisation with Costa Rican local musicians.  He then went to Berklee College of Music, where his
interest got more towards jazz, flamenco, celtic, and latin.  Of Gandhi's members, Federico is the most acquainted with harmony and theory and writes most of their musical arrangements.  He also performs often with his instrumental jazz-fusion group, 'Baula Project', whose debut album will be released in June 2005.  Miranda is also a graduated Electrical Engineer and loves audio, signal processing, recording, and music technology.

Federico Miranda is endorsed by DiMarzio pickups.

Luis Montalbert-Smith, vocals and piano [luis@grupogandhi.com]

Luis, together with Federico, formed the band Gandhi in 1993, after some time of being friends in highschool.  Luis began playing the piano at an age six, inspired by his grandmother.  He studied classical piano as a child, and then during highschool took on drums and later on, singing.  As a singer, he has a very particular voice, which is instantly recognized, and is one of the trademarks of the Gandhi sound.  He is a very prolific songwriter and writes many of Gandhi's music and most of it's lyrics.  After
highschool he entered art school as sculpture major, but left it shortly after to continue with music and other projects.  His favorite music and singers include: Depeche Mode, The Cure, and José José.  He is now a well-known public figure in the Costa Rica entertainment scene, and owns 3 bars/clubs in San Jose.
